Laser Scanning
Laser Scanning is a relatively new technology which works by taking thousands of measurements very rapidly to build up a "cloud" of 3D points from whatever is in the instruments field of view. The points are rather like the pixels in a digital photo except that each pixel has a 3D co-ordinate so it is possible to view the points from any location and direction and measure precise distances between them.
It is possible to record millions of points within a few minutes which can then viewed and manipulated to produce rectified images, 2D and 3D CAD drawings and 3D point clouds. As Laser Scanning is a reflectorless technology it is particularly suitable for surveying difficult to access areas. A further advantage of this system is that the whole area is captured at the time of survey and it is then just an office exercise to create further eg. sections at a later date.
We have used this technology to survey anything from single elevations through to complete 3D models of Manor Houses.
